Austin Show Previews

Church of the Friendly Ghost’s hot July

COTFG
Affable, spooky religion? Huh? That’s Austin! Beyond a classic house party, the most memorable and fun way to see a show in Austin earlier this millennium was at the Church of the Friendly Ghost, which was an actual (former) church on the east side. Paying a reasonable cover, sitting in a pew with a BYOB drink and seeing and hearing skewed pop, free jazz, and kinds of creative music was a unique way to party. Touring acts were often booked but COTFG has always focused on locals. Sadly, the venue shut down just as it hit its peak. But the name lives on with a consistent program of shows, held mostly these days at the fabulous Salvage Vanguard Theater on Manor Road.

Upcoming shows this month include Coz the Shroom (a former Austinite on tour), Chicago’s juffage, and Asthmatic Kitty recording artist Chris Shlarb accompanied by a huge Austin ensemble. Basic info and dates are available on the COTFG page above, but more descriptive previews are in their email blasts, so hit ‘em up here to subscribe.

Sex/Vid tonight at Emo’s!

One of the most difficult band names to google — and a group that insists on not having a myspace page — this beyond-hardcore bunch of freaks will take the stage late tonight at Emo’s inside room. This isn’t ’80s political punk, this isn’t throwback thrash, this is some of the crustiest, horrifying music you’ll ever hear. A couple of 7″s are out there and there’s a rumor of an LP coming on an esteemed indie. We’re guessing it’s not Rounder.

Also on the bill are hard-working Austinites Iron Age, launching a 2-week tour and planning an LP release for this Fall. Giuda from Italy and Black Congress start up the show ’roundabout 10pm, so deliver a blow to the bummer that Tuesdays can be, and go check out some gorgeously ugly music tonight.
