Church of the Friendly Ghost’s hot July

Affable, spooky religion? Huh? That’s Austin! Beyond a classic house party, the most memorable and fun way to see a show in Austin earlier this millennium was at the Church of the Friendly Ghost, which was an actual (former) church on the east side. Paying a reasonable cover, sitting in a pew with a BYOB drink and seeing and hearing skewed pop, free jazz, and kinds of creative music was a unique way to party. Touring acts were often booked but COTFG has always focused on locals. Sadly, the venue shut down just as it hit its peak. But the name lives on with a consistent program of shows, held mostly these days at the fabulous Salvage Vanguard Theater on Manor Road.
Upcoming shows this month include Coz the Shroom (a former Austinite on tour), Chicago’s juffage, and Asthmatic Kitty recording artist Chris Shlarb accompanied by a huge Austin ensemble. Basic info and dates are available on the COTFG page above, but more descriptive previews are in their email blasts, so hit ‘em up here to subscribe.
