THE LP QUESTIONNAIRE/PICK THREE - JONAH RAY

SXSW brings the funny this year with comedy showcases featuring Brian Posehn, Janeane Garofalo, Human Giant, and Jonah Ray

Here are the things Jonah Ray told me about himself:
Most of my life is up on the internet.
I was born in Hawaii, came to LA to do comedy but just ended up drinking in San Pedro for a year before doing anything.
i got a job as a PA on the second season of The Andy Milonakis Show before being fired and then immediately rehired as a writer. I fucked up-wards.
I used to roadie for some bands like Dios Malos and Giant Drag.
I”m on G4 TV a lot.
I did a small tour with Sean O’Conner in the fall called “STILL BORN in the USA”.
i HATE writing about myself.

And here is how Jonah answered The LP Questionnaire

Name: Jonah Ray
Pro Wrestling Name: Bulldog Bear, which makes sense because I shit and sleep all the time.

1. Pretend you’re 15 (and tell us what year it is, if you don’t mind). Name three songs you’d put on a mix tape for your girlfriend/boyfriend. When i was 15 the year was 1997 and I was probably about 300 lbs. and not really making mix tapes for ANYBODY but myself…and Abbie, the girl I had a crush on. Too bad it was her chubby friend that liked me… I wasn’t having that…too much flesh.

Three songs I was probably putting on every mix tape were “Peter Brady” by Screeching Weasel, “Start Today” by Gorilla Biscuits, and the cover of Elvis Costello’s “Hand in Hand” by Scared of Chaka. All I listened to was pop punk and hardcore.

2. Which evil villain would make the best president? I think the best evil villain that would make a good president is George W. Bush. BASS! POLITICAL JAB!!!

3. What was your favorite cartoon as a child? My favorite cartoon as a kid was Muppet Babies. I couldn’t handle the risqué humour of the grown up Muppets…just the baby versions. Didnt you ever see the prequel to Cool World? So much easier to swallow.

4. What superpower do you wish you had? I wish I could walk on water, but I’d only wanna do that when the water was SO cold it had frozen over or something crazy like that. But at the rate things are going, I doubt I’ll ever be able to realize this “superpower”….thanks a lot GEORGE W BOOSH! BOOM!!! BAM!!!! yet another slam on the U, S of A!

5. What would the title of your autobiography be? What if I Tried? A Story of an Unknown Comedian

Pick Three

Man Man: I’m really looking forward to seeing MAN MAN, one of the best live shows whether they are playing a room or an amphitheatre. I once opened up for them in NY and a fan of the band stormed the stage, body slammed me, and then sat on my face. Can’t blame the band for the fans….. unless it’s INSANE CLOWN POSSE…that’s America’s fault.

Darker My Love: Just plain old rad dudes in plaid shirts, beards, drinking beers. playing great psych-rock… is that a term? I think I read that word on Pitchfork… you’ve heard of Pitchfork, right? Yeah, they are TOTALLY on the nose when it comes to music terminology. “Psyched out skuzz rock for the blither blather in all of us” (actual quote… not really, but it’s not far off).

The Weakerthans: One of my all time favorite bands. Every time they put out a record it’s usually my favorite record of the year. I’ve seen them only once, they were on tour with The Promise Ring. If it were the late 90s you may as well call it an emo show….but the “non-term” of “emo” has come to mean something completely different….bangs….it means dark, greasy bangs.

And I need dark, greasy sleep. Pretend I’ve been witty and moderately charming and posted links to things here. Goodnight, lp

PICK THREE - JOHN NORRIS OF MTV

How long have we been watching John Norris deliver the newsie bits on MTV? Nearly 20 years? Damn!

Norris is a vegetarian, which means we have something in common so I know we’ll be BFF’s as soon as we’re re-introduced on Wednesday, who’s done a lot of the political and social issues coverage on MTV (in addition to interviewing “celebrities”).

I’m psyched he’s coming to cover SXSW yet again as he always makes the festival look so fun (it is fun, right? This is what I hear… the word “on the street,” if you will).

I’m also psyched he did a Pick Three… err, four.

Atlas Sound: There is only one Bradford Cox. The Deerhunter front man has taken it more electronic and more wistful, though hardly sentimental, for the first release under his long running solo alias. His touring band, includes members of Kranky labelmates Valet and White Rainbow, who are also on the bill.

The Morning Benders: On the brighter end of things are these Bay Area boys who jangle their way through a modern take on Sixties pop. Appropriately, their debut CD on +1 Records looks like an old vinyl 45. Good stuff.

No Age: No one does noise pop/punk better and no single band has people I know more excited these days than these guys. More than anyone, Dean and Randy have put LA’s The Smell on the national map. Their after midnight sets should send SXSW’ers into the Austin night good and thrashed.

White Williams: Joe Williams has only had his ‘band’ per se for eight months, but for much longer than that he was holed away working on Smoke – a debut record full of synth pop that’s tuneful, danceable, just a bit cool and twisted, and quite addictive.

Would you like to read more Pick Threes? Oh yes, I know you would! Many neat people did them. You can send emails about why it takes so long for my jeans to dry to musicblog@sxsw.com. Everyone is asleep but me… I am the night! lp
