PICK THREE - STOUT OUT LOUDS

Ahh, the friendly faces of Tami and Tierney Stout. The two are unrelated, but for their good cheer and ass kicking hard work.

Tierney Stout is in her third year at SXSW and has a new puppy named Moonshine.

She’s excited that her family is attending the festival this year but confesses a bit of worry that they might see “Beerney” in her truest form (not that anyone at SXSW drinks on the job… unless they’re drinking Miller Lite, of course.)

Tierney is the only member of the SXSW booking staff to hand in a Pick Three so for that, among other reasons (like the fact that she has a picture of herself with a giant stuffed duck), she rocks!

Bon Iver: This has been my favorite record throughout this year’s whole listening process. There was a month when it was all I listened to when I got home from work.

Enslaved: I recently went to Norway and have developed a new found love for black metal. The Scandinavian metal showcase is the show I am most excited for this year.

Three-way tie: El Guincho, GZA, & Lindstrom: I know that is cheating, but let’s face it…when forced to choose a replacement pick for good ol’ Dolly, there is no one. El Guincho, because he has never been to the States before (as far as I know), and his is stuff is pretty cool (a Spanish Animal Collective). GZA because…he’s THE GENIUS. I can’t wait to catch “Liquid Swords” live for the first time! And finally, Lindstrom because he will be performing his new album Where You Go I Go To live for the first time ever at SXSW for the Smalltown Supersound showcase. IT’S GOING DOWN!

Tami Stout is one of the few people in Austin these days that is actually an Austinite. She tested the waters of other states and cites, but can’t stay away from her hometown. She has a weakness for road trips even when it’s to places like South Dakota to see the the famous Corn Palace (where her “lovely, best boyfriend ever” is taking her after the festival).

Long Duck Dong is Ms. Stout’s hero (she loves the 80s - who doesn’t?!) and she used to think her iTunes was embarrassing to share, but finds there is always someone connected to her playlists when she shuts down at night.

In her free time at home, she likes to hang with her 3lb chihuahua, Nadine Mae the Wonder Dawg (often while reading true crime and watching the Lifetime Movie Network).

Her Pick Three

N.E.R.D.: I have missed their show every time there was an opportunity to see them, but I’ve had them in rotation since ‘02 when I was still carrying around my portable CD player in my bag. I’m stoked to see them, but don’t tell my boss because we don’t get to go to SXSW.

Texas Eastside Kings: I am fortunate enough to have an uncle that keeps me well stocked with the greatest blues in the business. As a kid, I remember sitting in big lounge chairs with the elder Stouts at some of the original Austin haunts, sipping a cherry Sprite and taking in the sweet sounds of many of these musicians.

Guns ‘N’ Bombs: Yes, yes, yes!!! I could shake some ass to this! And, I love guns. This is a win, win for me.

I’m listening to that Timbaland song “The Way I Are,” and I’m still amazed about the “You can still touch my nut, it’s free” line. What does that even mean?! I hope I’m allowed to say that… besides, it’s Timbaland’s fault, not mine.

I think Black Metal is awesome, too. The Cannibal Corpse/Dimmu Borgir show I saw at the Palace (now Avalon) in Los Angeles is still one of my favorite concerts ever. Those fans were so nice!! I’m being serious. Mark Scribner of PS Business Management (the finest business managers in the world) and I are going to see 1349 together. Don’t they look dreamy?!

Email corpse paint to musicblog@sxsw.com. What is a Red American Express card, anyway? lp

Hey look, it’s 2 am! What??! It’s 3??!! Curses! I don’t know what George Bush was thinking moving daylight savings to the middle of SXSW. Doesn’t he know we need all the hours we can get?! Sheesh!

PICK THREE - JAROD NEECE OF SXSW

Jarod Neece says his biggest accomplishments are his lovely wife & daughter and his taco blog. “One of them is award winning and the other will have to wait, but it’s looking good.”

He’s worked for the Film Festival since 2003, and is a self-proclaimed bad ass foosball player.

Apparently he is also really good at “fixing shit” and the “internets.” Regarding the photo, this is what he would look like if he was a 9 month old baby girl. I bet you’ll be able to find him just by looking at this. It’s uncanny!

Jarod’s Pick Three

Dizzee Rascal: Mad rhymes and futuristic beats. UK Grime at its finest.

The Black Keys: You can’t go wrong with two white guys that sound like a friggin’ freight train.

Half Japanese: If they are good enough for Kurt Cobain, they are good enough for me.

Thanks for, you know, reading and stuff. My iTunes shuffle is really screwing me tonight. Maybe it’s because I’ve been listening to the same playlist, 14 hours a day, for the last three weeks straight. But I like pretending I’m hearing something by chance. Especially when it’s Blue in Heaven (and no they’re not playing). Am I the only person who remembers (and hearts) that band? Email and let me know if you, too, have fond memories of Shane O’Neill and co. The address, as always, is musicblog@sxsw.com. Or, if you want to send some spam about fake Rolexes, that works, too. lp (Emoticons are so stupid they make me laugh. Oh damn, what if the inventor of emoticons is here at SXSW Interactive and I just stuck my foot in it? Okay, I just googled Scott Fahlman and SXSW and I think I’m safe. Besides, I use them all the freaking time. )

PICK THREE - MOLLY NEUMAN OF EMUSIC

From Molly’s official-like bio… Originally from Washington, DC, Molly Neuman began her career in music as the drummer for the seminal riot girl band Bratmobile. She moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and began to work at Lookout Records in 1994. In 1997 she became a partner and has been instrumental in the signing and development of such artists as The Donnas, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Ted Leo/Pharmacists among many others.

In 2001, she co founded Indivision Management, an artist management company dedicated to preserving artists autonomy in their careers while providing them with complete management services. In 2006 she founded Simple Social Graces Discos in an effort to document the thriving underground music scene in Spain, releasing records from artists such as Delorean, Grabba Grabba Tape, Les Aus and Two Tears, among others. Molly also began to work at eMusic as director of label relations.

Molly continues to play music with friends because this is what keeps her heart light. She is currently based in New York City.

Here is her Pick Three

Les Aus: “Just follow the energy” is a phrase I always think of when I think of Les Aus. Their unique style of prog psych infused punk is mesmerizing and powerful.

Delorean: Delorean are so incredible live. This will be their U.S. debut performance and it SHOULD NOT BE MISSED. Perfect, danceable rock, with smart lyrics. And they are BASQUE!

The Donnas: The Donnas show is so awesome. Fun, rocking and I still get a thrill when I see them play.

I swear I’m getting three more features up tonight. It’s creepy being all alone on 40th Street. I always think I’m going to look in my rearview mirror and see the scary monster from The Twilight Zone. You know, the one that was on the wing of the plane… Back shortly. I am William Shatner! lp

PICK THREE - HUGH FORREST OF SXSW

The SXSW Interactive Festival also began its 2008 festivities yesterday. Thanks to the cunning and charm of Hugh Forrest, along with Shawn O’Keefe and the rest of Team IA, SXSW Interactive has experienced blockbuster growth this year. I guess the internets are not just for nerds anymore (but nerds rule, says I).

I’m always supremely bummed that the week leading up to Music is my full-on crunch time because the programming those guys come up with always looks fascinating to me. I’m still irked that I missed Dan Rather last year (watching him on Chris Matthews just isn’t the same).

Anyway, to know Hugh is to, err, love Hugh. He is one of my favorite people over 6 ft tall.

In the midst of the chaos, HF managed a Pick Three for me…

Billy Bragg: Didn’t get to see him at SXSW last year. Mark my words, socialism will be big in 2008.

X: I’ve been re-discovering them ever since “See How We Are” was used on The Sopranos.

Rootz Underground: I have no idea who these guys are, but what could be better than Jamaican riddim to close out Saturday night? Turn up the bass!

I think I’m going to prefer sleep closing out Saturday night, but this year I might perhaps make an attempt to do some wee hours hanging with my SXSW brethren. We’ll see. I am pretty much a wimp, if you must know. I hope you Film and IA types are enjoying yourselves… seein’ movies… learnin’ bout CSS… doin’ stuff… Email marshmallows and cotton candy to musicblog@sxsw.com. Back in a bit. Later, tater, lp

THE LP QUESTIONNAIRE - ALAN SPARHAWK OF RETRIBUTION GOSPEL CHOIR

nullAlan Sparhawk of Low has a new group, Retribution Gospel Choir, and a self-titled Mark Kozelek produced debut that comes out on March 18.

The songs I’ve heard make me feel kind of nostalgic and more mysterious than I really am (which is, let’s face it, not very much at all). These are some deft and heavy tunes, and I encourage you to check them out because they definitely sound rich at 2 am to a brain full of Dr. Pepper and delirium.

Sparhawk has driven half a million miles, has two kids and lives in Minnesota with wife and bandmate Mimi Parker.

The man who says he is “living proof of Rock n Roll” answered The LP Questionnaire.

Name: Alan Sparhawk (Retribution Gospel Choir)
Pro Wrestling Name: Full Metal Tornado

1. Pretend you’re 15 (and tell us what year it is, if you don’t mind). Name three songs you’d put on a mix tape for your girlfriend/boyfriend.
It’s 1983. “So Tired” by Ozzy Osbourne, “Comfortably Numb” by Pink Floyd, and then something by Billy Idol - girls love the Billy Idol.

2. Which evil villain would make the best president? Gargamel. His stupid cat Azrael could be VP.

3. What was your favorite cartoon as a child? Frank n Ernest still has the best drawing to be found. Nobody carries it now so I have to read Family Circus.

4. What superpower do you wish you had? If I could fly I could get alot of shit done.

5. What would the title of your autobiography be? Here’s twenty bucks. Have a great life.

Well, that was, I think, one of my favorite evil villain answers thus far. His stupid cat Azrael. I’m still chortling down here on 40th street. Please feel free to go back in time and read more LP Questionnaires with other interesting people like Billy Zoom of X, Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, Sune Rose Wagner of The Raveonettes, Parker Gispert of The Whigs, Miss Sari of White Shoes and the Couples Company and many more (and God I hope I’m not insulting the awesome sauce contributions of Rams from Jet Lag, Susan and Bob Cowsill, Ben Spurr of The Coast and if I left anyone out - like James McNew, Meredith from Bodies of Water and Hanson - I blame the fact that the smell of chocolate is freaking me out). My head is cocked like a dog and my finger’s on the trigger, lp

Oh yeah, email emails to musicblog@sxsw.com
