JAMIE CERRETA OF CHRYSALIS MUSIC

Jamie Cerreta, the Senior Director of A&R at Chrysalis Music, is a former bass player whose secret aspiration is to play in Ozzy’s band.

Wisely, the owl who made a cameo in Louie Bandak’s Pick Three, belongs to him.

And speaking of Pick Threes, here’s one from JC…

High On Fire: The Kings of stoner metal, always amazing.

The Knux: Hip Hop with New Orleans funk, incredible, the next big thing.

MSTRKRFT: Best dj’s in the business, I’m going to take a lot of drugs and freak out.

I really pondered editing out the “take a lot of drugs” part but having decided it’s a funny, I’m leaving it in. Of course, I’ve been staring at this screen for thirteen hours straight and I’m listening to Green Day so what the hell do I know? Jamie Cerreta’s a cool guy, that’s what I know. But then again, most bass players are cool. They rule the school and so on and so forth. Email deep breaths to musicblog@sxsw.com. Read more Pick Three type things here. PICK THREE - STEVE FERGUSON OF PARADIGM

Ohh, Steve, you funny funny guy. Click here for a larger version of the pic.

Steve Ferguson shares with me a love of Britpop… I think I first met him when I was part of the booking staff here in 96 and we were trying to get Suede here. At least I think it was Suede…

Anyway, Steve’s fascination with the music business began when he saw The Beatles’ film A Hard Day’s Night at the age of 12. He thought working in the business would be fun and decided to see if he could succeed in that field. Mission accomplished. He is a 20 year veteran agent, who admits to being an anglophile, music junkie and counts sleeping among his favorite hobbies. He will be spending SXSW absorbing music, BBQ and the other unique qualities Austin has to offer. His birthday is St Patrick’s Day, so it’s your round…

I’m glad Steve sent me that mini bio. If I had to be creative right now my head might fall off.

Here’s a Pick Three from one of my favorite agents…

R.E.M.: I’ve been a fan since Chronic Town and own every record (the good and the not-as-good) and seen dozens and dozens of their shows throughout the years. I believe the last time I saw them live was at Madison Square Garden, the day after Election Day 2004 when Bush won a 2nd term. So from one surreal show to another- R.E.M. @ SXSW. A perfect circle?. I best not sing along for the entire show, or I’ll be hoarse for the rest of the week. Actually, that sounds like a good idea…..

The Duke Spirit: Biased as I am (they are clients of mine), I would see them any day of the week, including Wednesday at the KCRW showcase @ Buffalo Billards. Their new album Neptune is out now via iTunes (old skool retail street date is April 8). Come and be transfixed by Leila Moss, the lead vocalist and her accompanying men in black. I dare you not to fall under their spell.

Carbon/Silicon: They are another client I shall shamelessly push; playing Thursday at Friends for (ironically) Clash Magazine’s showcase. Comprised of two legends - Mick Jones (The Clash & Big Audio Dynamite) and Tony James (Generation X & Sigue Sigue Sputnik) - they are also featured speakers, in a live interview during SXSW. They are still making great new music; putting it out for free on the net (long before the Radiohead did) and great fellas to boot.

Ahh Sigue Sigue Sputnik… I remember listening to them as a teen and my mother coming into my room freaking out because of the “shoot it up” lyrics. Good times. I never did shoot up no matter what they sang. Ya hear that ma?! My veins remain uncorrupted! Too bad I can’t say the same about my brain. It’s been snowing all day back in Kentucky. I am muy sad not to be there for it. I hope our pipes don’t freeze or something. Hrm. Email flurries to musicblog@sxsw.com. Our thoughts compressed, which make us blessed, lp

THE LP QUESTIONNAIRE/PICK THREE - MATT DENTLER OF SXSW

The SXSW Film Festival starts today and before he fled the office for the downtown melee, I got Matt Dentler, the Producer of the festival to send over a Pick Three.

I know Matt Dentler blogs like crazy over at Indiewire, but when I asked him to tell me a few things about himself he got all circumspect and would only say that this is his 10th SXSW and his sixth great-grandfather is Davy Crockett (although after a fun fact like that, what else is there to say?)

I hear rumblings about him and something called Mumblecore, but since the last movie I saw in the theatre was Transformers or something, I have no idea what that is. I know he likes my husband’s band, and I see him smoking in my rear view mirror on a regular basis.

Back in December I subjected him to The LP Questionnaire. What better place to publish the results than right here, right now…

Name: Matt Dentler
Pro Wrestling Name: Mighty Ironstorm

1. Pretend you’re 15. Name three songs you’d put on a mix tape for your girlfriend (and tell us what year it is). The year is 1994: “Sometimes Always” by Jesus and Mary Chain, “Soma” by The Smashing Pumpkins, and “I Melt With You” by Modern English.

2. Which evil villain would make the best president? Martha Stewart.

3. What was your favorite cartoon as a child? Anything involving claymation.

4. What superpower do you wish you had? The ability to stare at someone and then turn away undetected, when they look in my direction.

5. What would the title of your autobiography be? Full of Myself: A Memoir

Pick Three

Black Moth Super Rainbow: They released my favorite album of 2007. Dark, sweet, psychedelic, and epic. They’re from Pittsburgh, but they sound like they’re from Jupiter.

Ola Podrida: This is the personal project of film composer David Wingo, and it’s become an insanely rich and magical combination of acoustic melodies. It’s even better live.

MGMT: Very buzzy, but very worth it. This new Brooklyn duo is putting together some of the craziest and catchiest rock I’ve heard in a while.

Thanks for joining us today. TGIF and stuff except the word Friday has no meaning for me anymore. I only know TGI316 (except, of course, I’m totally looking forward to seeing each and every one of you next week. For reals). I must return my attention to MTV’s shooting schedule. Want to know where John Norris is gonna be? Here, on the SXSW Music Blog next Monday! Yup, J-No did a Pick Three. More bloggedy goodness coming later. Read more LP Questionnaires here. Email birthday parties to musicblog@sxsw.com. I’m in love with Love’s Theme, lp

THE BIRTH OF THE NEW MUSIC WAVE

Fobia
Ten days prior to the 1968 Olympic games in Mexico City, one of the most macabre and controversial events took place in Mexico’s history known today as The Tlatelolco Massacre, resulting in the deaths of thousands of student demonstrators. Mexico’s president feared the youth revolts and later banned rock music throughout the country. Government officials raided nightclubs, arrested fans and musicians and prohibited the music from hitting the air-waves. In 1971, Festival Rock y Ruedas de Avandaro considered to be Mexico’s Woodstock was mysteriously organized gathering close to 300,000 people in attendance.

The sounds of UK, US and Canadians bands influenced this underground music movement and by the late 80’s and early 90’s bands like Café Tacvba, Caifanes, Maldita Vecindad and Fobia surfaced. Today’s new wave of Mexico’s rock scene sings in English and might sing a song or two in Spanish if they please, they refuse to be boxed into some categorical label of “Rock en Español”, it’s not as if you say “Rock in French”. Their musical influences vary from act to act, their freedom of expression is no longer oppressed by the government that once banned it and their music is now heard around the globe with the click of a mouse.

March 12th, Opal Divine’s Freehouse will showcase Fobia, Mexico’s progressive pioneer rock band who have shared the stage with the Rolliing Stones, Sussie 4’s electro beats based from Monterrey, Mexico and the fore front of this new music wave composed of Los Dynamite (Mexico City, MX), Kanko (Austin, TX), Descartes a Kant (Guadalajara, MX), Le Baron (Mexico City, MX) and Satin Dolls (Mexico City, MX) presented by WARP Magazine.
