PICK THREE - MATT PINFIELD OF SXSW LIVE

Who knew when I was just a young carefree twentysomething (okay, I have never been young… or carefree, but whatever) watching Matt Pinfield on MTV’s 120 Minutes that one day we would work together and I would get a chance to find out what a sweet, affable guy he is (and diehard music fan).

I’m looking forward to Matt hosting another round of SXSW Live, and this year’s lineup looks to be quite smashing with performances by X, Tift Merritt, Daniel Lanois, Hanson, Carbon/Silicon and gosh, I could go on and on. The fine people at Blaze TV have really outdone themselves this year.

You can catch SXSW Live on DirecTV’s channel 101 from 4-midnight CDT next Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Hi-Def good times are coming your way.

And you can catch Señor Pinfield’s Pick Three right here…

Vampire Weekend: saw them in NYC and loved the live show-very precise and even more powerful live than the record so I am excited to see them again.

Sea Wolf (pictured): Love their first EP on Dangerbird records and the new album is good, too. Want to see how it translates live.

Duke Spirit: I’ve been playing them on the air for a couple of years and i am going to miss their NYC show with the Kooks so I have to check them out at SXSW.

Thanks, Matt. Thanks, you. Thank God I’m not staying here til 2 am tonight. I have to go dye my hair so I can pretend I’m not ancient. I will fool everyone!! Check out more Pick Three treats here. I will return shortly. Email freshwater fish to musicblog@sxsw.com. I love my stapler, lp

Dolly Parton has cancelled her appearance at SXSW due to health reasons. She really wanted to come and play for the SXSW attendees and the people of Austin, but her doctor says that she needs to stay home and rest for a few weeks. We wish Dolly a speedy recovery.

THE LP QUESTIONNAIRE - BILLY ZOOM OF X

I don’t think I can come up with a bunch of frilly preamble to describe the supreme cool that is legendary guitarist Billy Zoom. My little words will just cheapen the effect. All I can say is Billy Zoom gives the best hugs! My friend Jamie and I can attest to this fact. Yes… fact.

X plays Friday at SXSW Live and Saturday at Emo’s.

And without further ado, BZ and The LP Questionnaire

Name: Billy Zoom
Pro Wrestling Name: Bunkhouse Ninja. I assume this makes some kind of sense to you. The last time I watched pro-wrestling, Vern Gagne was still the champion. I guess times have changed.

1. Pretend you’re 15 (and tell us what year it is, if you don’t mind). Name three songs you’d put on a mix tape for your girlfriend/boyfriend. The year would be 1963. We didn’t have mixes or tapes then. I was listening to “Time Out” by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, “Green Onions” by Booker T. and the MG’s, and “Night Train” by Buddy Morrow.

2. Which evil villain would make the best president? I think most of them have already been there and done that.

3. What was your favorite cartoon as a child? Either Peanuts or Krazy Kat…depending on my mood.

4. What superpower do you wish you had? The power to understand women.

5. What would the title of your autobiography be? It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time.

We heart Billy Zoom! More good stuff on the way. Seems surreal that you’ll all be here in a week. Email astronauts to musicblog@sxsw.com. And when I woke from sleep, there was only me, lp

THE LP QUESTIONNAIRE/PICK THREE - JAMES MCNEW OF YO LA TENGO

International man of mystery James McNew of Yo La Tengo lives in Brooklyn, NY and likes Vietnamese sandwiches. He does bloggish things… occasionally… here.

You can see Yo La Tengo with My Morning Jacket and The Whigs on Thursday (the one in a week, not in two days) at the Austin Music Hall.

Mr. McNew on The LP Questionnaire

Name: James McNew
Pro Wrestling Name: This is my wrestling name.

1. Pretend you’re 15 (and tell us what year it is, if you don’t mind). Name three songs you’d put on a mix tape for your girlfriend/boyfriend.

Black Flag, “Depression,” Thin Lizzy, “Cowboy Song,” Flipper, “Way of The World.” She wouldn’t have liked it.

2. Which evil villain would make the best president? How I wish this were a funny question.

3. What was your favorite cartoon as a child? Speed Racer

4. What superpower do you wish you had? I would’ve liked to have somehow been able to prevent The Police from ever playing again.

5. What would the title of your autobiography be? Will There Ever Be A Rainbow?

Pick Three

Antietam: An awesome, legendary band with a fantastic new album, the best they’ve ever made.

El-P: Abrasive, assaulting, beautiful, confounding music from Brooklyn’s gentleman scientist.

Todd Barry: America’s greatest living drummer will bring the motherfucking ruckus.

I’m still listening to The Coast. It’s the only thing that makes me smile. That and James’ answer to question number four. Got RSS? Email sticks of chewing gum to musicblog@sxsw.com. What are you waiting for, lp
