PICK THREE - JAMIE AND CHRIS SAMPSON

The indomitably spirited brothers Sampson bring their special brand of awesomeness to Flatiron Management (Jamie) and Red Light Management (Chris). The brothers (pictured here at Disneyworld) slept on bunk beds from years 6 to 12. And again at, err, ages 25 and 23 (apparently this was not a wise idea…) Now they live a block from each other in Brooklyn and are poised to take over the music industry (but only after they’ve caught up on Gossip Girl).

Pick Three Jamie Sampson Style…

Care Bears on Fire: They’re a group of pre-teens & tweens from my neighborhood in Brooklyn, who have already been plugged as a band to watch by Billboard and have licensed a song to a Converse ad. I’ve definitely gotta see what this is about…

Sea Wolf: He released one of my favorite records of last year, and I’m looking forward to watching the show.

MGMT: Oracular Spectacular is just a great record. I’m hoping for big things for them, and am psyched to watch them in Austin.

Pick Three in the way of Chris Sampson

Sea Wolf: I keep on listening to this record more and more. The best part is, the songs come from someone I know, and I don’t think there is a better feeling in the world than seeing someone you care about succeed at what they love doing. Most of all, I look forward to hanging with my friend Saturday night. Go see Sea Wolf!

My Morning Jacket: I think right now MMJ is the best live band in the world. They just crush me when I see them live… and every time they just get better and better. They can groove like The Verve, bring the funk like Shuggie, and rock it like Zeppelin.

Film School: Their self-titled record has been playing in my car, office, etc… all year.

It’s that part of the night I like best. I’m starting to wake up again, it’s silent in the office with the exception of the Duran Duran blaring in my headphones, and no one is asking me about board feeds (though I love my little media outlets, each and every one of them). Midnight is magical! Email new religions to musicblog@sxsw.com. Okay, my reasoning might be clouded by the sun, lp

PICK THREE - LOUIE BANDAK OF CAPITOL RECORDS

Capitol Records Vice President of A&R Louie Bandak (not pictured) is my favorite A&R person in the world. Of course, he’s only like one of ten left. They’re an endangered species, those A&R types. Soon we will only be able to visit them at the zoo.

Louie was kind enough to do a Pick Three. Yay!!

Castledoor: Cool band from LA. They make me smile. Won’t be long before they are more than just LA’s little secret.

The Wombats: “Let’s dance to joy division and celebrate the irony”… Great line from a great song. Looking forward to seeing their live show, and hoping they can live up to the hype.

My Morning Jacket: Probably my favorite band to see live these days. They always put on an epic show. Can’t wait to hear their new songs.

I can’t wait to hear them, either! I also can’t wait to go to sleep tonight. Email tasty caffeinated beverages to musicblog@sxsw.com. The bunnies have been knocked over, lp

PICK THREE - ANDREW LOOG OLDHAM AND THE ROCK MEMOIRS PANEL

Memoirs… all alone in the moonlight… What makes a compelling autobiography? Who says there’s no new tale to tell? From the heartfelt (Laurie Lindeen) to the cautionary tomes (Jennifer Trynin and Jacob Slichter) and on to the man who’s been there, done that and seen it all (Andrew Loog Oldham), Holly George Warren moderates a panel that re-examines the examined life.

Among the legend of Andrew Loog Oldham is the fact that he managed The Rolling Stones in the 60s. He currently lives in Colombia where he hosts a show on Steven Van Zandt’s Underground Garage.

Please enjoy his rather poetic Pick Three

The
Raveonettes
/British Sea Power/The Chevelles.
Play ‘em all on the Steven Van Zandt Underground Garage Sirius show I do,
I wanna see if what I saw when I heard will be when I see.

The LP Questionnaires and Pick Threes might have to start getting down and dirty (read: short and sweet). It’s fun to be flowery and I’m sure you’re all just dying to read my slightly bizarro stream of consciousness, but I am but one man and no man is an island and, really, I’m not even a man. See. Word economy will do us all some good! Thanks for reading. If you find my personality, please return it to musicblog@sxsw.com. Curses! lp

Rootz Underground - Reggaes NEXT Generation

Rootz Underground
Rootz Underground, known for their signature blend of contemporary roots reggae with rock, dub and jazz influence, releases their highly anticipated debut album Movement on March 4th, 2008 on Riverstone Records/Mystic Urchin via Ryko/Warner Music Group.

Rootz Underground is the ultimate live music experience, harkens back to the classic reggae bands of the 70’s and 80’s (Bob Marley and The Wailers, Steel Pulse and Third World). Their fresh fusion of musical genres and beautiful instrumentation has scored them #1 hits and a devoted fan base in their home of Jamaica. In March, the band sets sail to tour the United States with Gregory Isaacs and perform at this year’s South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, TX.

Their debut album Movement serves up rich sounds full of careful layers with universal and honest lyrics. The songs have a serious rock music sensibility with breakdowns into hard-hitting grooves, intense builds and smooth transitions back to the one-drop reggae rhythm. The album’s compelling hit “Victims of the System,” remained #1 on Jamaica’s MTV Tempo Cross Caribbean Countdown for so long that they had to retire the video. The current tune “Hammer,” produced by the reggae/dancehall genius Bobby Digital, has been steadily making impressions in Jamaica. It’s new video recently debuted on Jamaica’s Entertainment Report on TVJ and is currently being serviced in the US. This 14-song set is an eclectic mix that will appeal to a wide range of music enthusiasts.

They have become a favorite of the Marley family and were asked to join them at their annual Welcome To Jamrock show in Kingston this past December and will continue more dates with them in the future. On March 15th, the band will make their Texas debut at the SXSW Music Festival as the headlining act at Flamingo Cantina on an eclectic showcase with other genre bending “reggae” artists. Line up is below.
