PICK THREE - TONY DOBSON OF METROPOLIS MUSIC

Tony Dobson (not pictured), of Metropolis Music, is one of the top concert promoters in the UK. In addition to putting on hundreds of concerts across England every year, Metropolis is also a partner in the V Festival.

I first met Tony in 2002 (or was it 03? Damn). Touring in the UK was a new and interesting experience, and Tony and everyone at Metropolis showed us a grand old time as we spent many a fun evening at the bar at the Columbia (although, sadly, Rock and Roll Valhalla seems to be no more. Everyone’s moved on to some hotel near Shepherd’s Bush…)

Mr. Dobson was kind enough to share some Pick Three choices…

My Morning Jacket: Just because they are my favorite band, and they have to be one of the best live bands in the world… I’m not exaggerating!!

Richard Hawley: Next would be Richard Hawley, fantastic record and a great live performer. (Hawley’s no longer performing, sorry, but that doesn’t mean TD loves him any less.)

The Answer: Then I’m looking forward to watching The Answer. Great Irish rock band.

It’s late night here at the SXSW Music Blog… We hope you’ve been enjoying all the Pick Three nuttiness. I know I’ve been learning lots. I’ll be back bright and early with more, more, more. How do you like it, email musicblog@sxsw.com. The Colbert Report is on and I’m off, lp

PICK THREE - KRIS GILLESPIE OF DOMINO RECORDS

Kris Gillespie, North American label director for The Domino Recording Co. Ltd., was set upon a life in music when he learned to read by following the lyrics on album jackets, mainly The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars. Forever since, music has been a constant source of exhilaration and comfort.

It is entirely possible that you’ll find Gillespie drowning his sorrows in a fruit flavored margarita when Kansas is eliminated prematurely in the NCAA tournament before the convention is over.

Kris made time for Pick Three and for that we are grateful.

Jay Reatard: An unrelenting rock assault… 10 songs in 20 minutes. Heavy riffage on Gibson Flying Vs that’s equal parts punk, power pop and the (old) new wave of British Metal. Tied for best show attended in 2007.

Blitzen Trapper: Recent Sub Pop signees serve up jagged chunks of Beefheart, southern fried boogie stomp, McCartney pop delicacy, bratty Pavement swagger, Thin Lizzy jamming with Animal Collective in a tribal freakout, Wilco on an 8-bit bender… and that’s just side one of their excellent latest album, Wild Mountain Nation.

These New Puritans: I would be lying to not include them in this list but am reluctant to because of the work affiliation… Southend, UK band evoke strong memories of Wire and Moonshake on record in the most pleasant of ways. I haven’t seen them yet live and I’m EAGERLY looking forward to it.

I’m eating tater tots and listening to Triumph while I write (in the spirit of running Kris’ Pick Three I should be listening to Ulrich Schnauss, who’s crazy amazing, but I have no control over iTunes shuffle). Yes, I am too cool… for school. Do you love Rik Emmett like I do? Why not drop me a line at musicblog@sxsw.com. Luck will finally arrive, lp

THE LP QUESTIONNAIRE - BOB COWSILL OF THE COWSILLS

How completely awesome is it that Bob Cowsill did The LP Questionnaire and Pick Three? Sister Susan is coming up next week. I have The Cowsills on our little bloggy! Very very cool.

The Cowsills, a family group who were the original inspiration for The Partridge Family, had a string of hits in the 60s ranging from “The Rain, the Park and Other Things” to “Hair.” They also recorded the theme song for Love, American Style.

I read that Bob also works in the medical industry helping to train Emergency Departments on a software package that he helped to develop. (from cowsill.com). People always joke that musicans aren’t exactly saving lives but he actually is!

On Friday, you can catch The Cowsills on Florence Henderson’s show on DirecTV. Hmm… I wonder if anyone at DirecTV is reading this… Florence Henderson should come to SXSW, too!

Before I start waxing nostalgic about 60s pop music and The Brady Bunch (while glossing over the fact that I wasn’t quite born in the 60s, just gestating), I present to you, the SXSW blog reader, Bob Cowsill’s LP Questionnaire

Name: Bob Cowsill
Pro Wrestling Name: Okay, apparently my pro wrestling name is “Brooklyn Nova” - I can live with that - actually I kind of like it…a lot. If I ever develop an ego that’s so huge I need to have my name preceed the group’s I wouldn’t have “Bob Cowsill and The Cowsills”, I’d have “Brooklyn Nova and The Cowsills.”

1. Pretend you’re 15 (and tell us what year it is, if you don’t mind). Name three songs you’d put on a mix tape for your girlfriend/boyfriend. The year was 1965. At that time in my life I would have chosen “Moon River” by Andy Williams, “Do You Believe in Magic?” by the Lovin’ Spoonful and “My Girl” by the Temptations.

2. Which evil villain would make the best president? Don Corleone. He would have made money in the process, true, but he would have straightened everybody out, and nobody would have given him any crap, and the United States would have at least, at a minimum, commanded “respect” throughout the world. “President Corleone, how will you deal with Hugo Chavez, sir?” “I will make him an offer he can’t refuse.”

3. What was your favorite cartoon as a child? The Road Runner. I learned a lot from Wile E. Coyote…never never never give up, no matter the outcome, the danger, the improbability, the roadblocks, the obstacles. Get ahead of the rock even though the rock might crush you. It’s true that I never saw him succeed, but he never ever stopped trying…really unbelievable dedication and belief in his purpose. I was always rooting for him even though I knew it was his destiny to fail. I wanted to become that driven in my pursuits.

4. What superpower do you wish you had? Flight. I’ve flown in dreams so I’m familiar with that power… what it feels like to actually fly. I’ve flown over tree tops, swooped down and swooped up and swooped all around just by maneuvering my arms this way or that. It’s the only superpower I’ve ever personally experienced so that might be causing me to lean that way because I would love to be able to do it anytime I feel like it. I’d only want the other superpowers periodically and some of them would drive me literally insane. Flight is different than the rest.

5. What would the title of your autobiography be? Songs From My Father’s House

Pick Three

Any band with the word “Fuck” in their name just so I can go up and give them some “fucking” advice…as in, “what the FUCK were you thinking?”

The Presidents of the United States of America: I liked them… thought they were very cool.

Jakob Dylan: He should have had 50 more hit records. What happened?

(unfortunately Jakob Dylan is no longer performing but in the interest of the sanctity of Bob’s choices, I’m leaving it be).

I’m listening to Melissa Manchester (no, she’s not performing, either), and Mel’s getting me through the 5 o’clock blues. Is there such a thing or did I just make that up? Good times with Jim James and Jacob Golden tomorrow. More coming your way tonight in a Pick Three blitz. Got RSS? Our feed does a body good! That was a pathetic joke, sorry. Email better ones to musicblog@sxsw.com. I just ate ice cream cake! lp

PICK THREE - (HAPPY BIRTHDAY!) JENN MARSHALL OF SXSW

It’s Jenn Marshall’s birthday today so let’s all sing for our super cool mistress of the Registration Department. Well, you sing… I think if anyone heard me singing “Happy Birthday” at them, their birthday might not be so happy anymore.

The statuesque Jenn loves sushi (I see another theme starting here - see, also, Amy Wanke) and could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. She collects pressed souvenir pennies and loves to travel but hates to fly.

She shares a birthday with Chelsea Clinton, Elizabeth Taylor, and Ralph Nader. Hrm… what an auspicious list that is.

Ms. Marshall said her birthday wish is to be on “Linda Park’s Music Blog.” Well, I live to make people’s wishes come true (ask anyone, I’m my own personal Make a Really Easy Wish Foundation). I may have just lied there…

But I’m not lying when I say I am muy excited to present Jenn Marshall’s Pick Three

NOFX: These guys are playing here in Austin this Friday… I’m so excited they’re coming to SXSW. No explanation as to why they are so awesome… they are NOFX.

Joseph Arthur
: My friend Ryan introduced me to his music about a year and a half ago… I was hooked instantly. He keeps it simple, but lyrically can be quite complex… all this going on - without sacrificing his music.

RX Bandits: Austin traffic sucks… I put these guys on and drum along on my steering wheel. First time I saw these kids they were opening for Alkaline Trio a couple years back. I normally loathe opening bands, but they blew me away. They put so much energy and effort into their shows.

Hope you’re all having a fine and dandy Wednesday morning and that the sun is shining in your sky and in… :sniff: your hearts! The insanity is creeping in but lemme tell ya, you see one magical show or panel at SXSW and it makes it all worthwhile. At least that’s what I keep telling myself. Email your favorite song to musicblog@sxsw.com. Fake it ’til you make it, lp
