PICK THREE - DAVID NEWGARDEN OF MANAGE THIS!

David Newgarden, nice guy manager (is that an oxymoron? Just kitten! However, I did tour manage a band for him, and he just seemed so normal), heads to SXSW this year with his artist, the lovely Tift Merritt.

Way back in the stone age, when SXSW took place at the Hyatt (or maybe it was the during the Pleistocene epoch when we were at the Marriott), young David, then the Program Director at WFMU, moderated SXSW’s first “Alternative Music” panel. Isn’t that a nice story?

Have a gander at DN’s Pick Three

The Homosexuals: More mysterious than Jandek, more legendary than Half Japanese…

Dan Melchior Und Das Menace: 90% rock 15% roll

Blitzen Trapper: A lesson for young bands – tour for two months straight – you will become great or you’ll kill each other.

Emoticons on the SXSW blog… I just wanted to see if they worked. Thanks for reading. I know I said something about “fast and furious posting” and I meant it. Starting tomorrow, we’ll be content crazy around here. No one reads this part of the post, anyway. Well, Melissa does. She even emailed a wombat to me. Are you reading? Why not drop me a line at musicblog@sxsw.com. Just don’t say anything too mean or try to sell me Viagra. Yes, I’m kooky! lp

PICK THREE - MARY WILSON & LYNDA GOODENOUGH, THE FABULOUS LADIES OF SXSW HOUSING

Mere words are inadequate when it comes to describing the greatness of Mary Wilson and Lynda Goodenough. The two comprise the SXSW Housing Department and let me tell you, slotting everyone into rooms across Austin is more complex than solving a Rubik’s Cube (I just totally dated myself AND now you know I’m not a genius).

Wilson (or “Mother Mary” as she’s known in these parts), a reggae aficionado from San Angelo who brings us bagels every Friday, even fills her house full of guests when SXSW rolls around. She took time out from hotel deadlines to share her Pick Three.

Katchafire: I am absolutely ecstatic about Katchafire from New Zealand coming to SXSW! I’ve been sharing Katchafire music with touring reggae artists for the past year and the first thing I hear from the back of the bus is “who dat?” and “where da from?” This is a band not to be missed!

Inner Visions: It is a blessing to have these renowned reggae artists performing at SXSW. Inner Visions are from the Virgin Islands and will be kicking off SXSW 08 at the Fado Patio on Wednesday night - a great new space to listen to reggae.

Christopher Rees: Christopher Rees is so much fun to watch. I met him at NXNE a few years ago in Toronto, and he’s stuck like glue in my song shuffle. Can’t wait to see ya Corn Dog!

Texas native Lynda Goodenough grew up going to live shows and outdoor (hippy) festivals. She worked her way up here at SXSW going from volunteer to Assistant Housing Coordinator (she handles Artist Housing). Lynda cannot cook, but that’s okay, right? Some of the, uh, best people around aren’t culinarily inclined.

Here’s her Pick Three…

Lyrics Born: Funky, catchy, hot, pop-y beats. This will be an amazing show.

Adele: Beautiful, sultry voice. I like her style.

Ice Cube: He’s the Cube. He’s iconic. I’m interested to see how he’s evolved. Plus, I suspect this gig will be just plain fun.

Thanks for being here on this sunny Saturday. More Pick Three offerings here. I’ll be back in a bit. Special Guest Blogger Ed Ward coming up tomorrow! Email wombats to musicblog@sxsw.com. Let the good times roll, lp
