Another Texas Legend Laid to Rest
The staff of South By Southwest would like to send it’s deepest condolences to the family of Chad Butler aka Pimp C, one half of the ground breaking rap duo, UGK.
From their meager beginnings in Port Arthur, TX, UGK was one of the first Texas rap acts to be picked up by a major label. They signed to Jive Records in 1991 and released five successful albums between then and 2007, their latest, a self-titled double disc, debuted on the Billboard charts at #1 this past summer, and their lead off single “International Players Anthem (I Choose You) featuring Outkast” was nominated for a Grammy.
Pimp C passed away from unknown causes last week and was found alone in a hotel room in Los Angeles, CA. This is a tragic loss for the music world. We were fortunate enough to host two shows from UGK at SXSW 2007, both sold out affairs that were remembered by many as the highlight of last years festival.
His body will be laid to rest in his hometown of Port Arthur tomorrow, December 13th. Service details can be found by clicking here. He will be sadly missed.

SXSW is pleased to announce that Steve Reich and Thurston Moore are confirmed for a SXSW Interview. Steve Reich has been called “…America’s greatest living composer.” (The Village Voice), “…the most original musical thinker of our time” (The New Yorker) and “…among the great composers of the century” (The New York Times). “There’s just a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history and Steve Reich is one of them,” states The Guardian (London). His instantly recognizable musical language combines propulsive rhythms and seductive instrumental color.
