RIP LEROI MOORE

LeRoi Moore of the Dave Matthews Band passed away today in Los Angeles due to complications from an ATV accident last June.
He was 46.

Our thoughts go out to Moore’s family and everyone in the Dave Matthews camp.

SXSW SPEAKER UPDATE

Ice Cube’s new record is out this week, it’s called “Raw Footage,” on Cube’s new indie label, Lench Mob Records. Cube and DJ Pooh sat down for a SXSW Interview in March. Music blogger Linda said that Cube looks like a teddy bear.

Cube gave SXSW 2008 attendees a preview of the record at his memorable show at our outdoor stage show in March. One of the new songs he played was the topical “Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It.” Take a gander at the video here:

Our good friends over at the Austin Chronicle have started a new online film debate series called Film Fight.
What is Film Fight, you ask? Here is a description from their website:

Film Fight is a monthly series in which the Chronicle’s film critics go head-to-head on all things filmic. Cast a vote for each day, Monday to Friday, for who you think won the day. Join the fight yourself by commenting on our blogs, and you just might win a prize.

Intrigued? Me, too. So, get thee over to the Chron’s Film Fight website and comment and vote!

CHINESE DEMOCRACY - NON-OLYMPICS EDITION

So, it seems like the long awaited Guns N’ Roses record, Chinese Democracy may actually see the light of day. Is Buckethead still on it? That guy is awesome.

See, all we needed was a little…

A bit more imminent is Peter, Bjorn and John’s Seaside Rock, due out on September 23. You can find P,B & J on the 2007 edition of SXSW Live available through Shout Factory.

Here’s Kanye West doing his take on “Young Folks” with the happy Swedes. Swedish people are awesome, too.

And finally, Fleet Foxes have announced a lengthy US Tour. It will be hard to miss them, it seems, and everyone loves the Foxes! They were pretty sublime on Letterman recently.

Happy weekending, lp

REMEMBERING JERRY WEXLER

While pondering the death of Jerry Wexler, coming so soon after Isaac Hayes, we turned to a great interview with Wexler from 2000 by Raoul Hernandez from the Austin Chronicle. My suggestion - dig out an Aretha record and put it on, read the interview, and surely you’ll find another record in your collection that Wexler had a hand in.

THURSDAY LATE NIGHT NEWS - NASTIA LIUKIN EDITION

Okay, so I’m excited that Nastia Liukin won the women’s all around in women’s gymnastics tonight… She’s a Texan you know.. From the dreaded Plano, like me, and a future SMU student…

But enough about the Olympics… let’s move on to politics!

John McCain and Barack Obama gave Blender their playlists (I think this is slightly stale news, actually) and John McCain loves Abba just like me! It may be one of three things we probably have in common, but the power of Abba is strong.

So strong, in fact, that the soundtrack for Mamma Mia is the current #1 record on Billboard’s Top 200, Pierce Brosnan’s (bless his heart) interesting singing aside!

Travis have a new label, their own Red Telephone Box, and a new video for the song “Something Anything.” Travis are so dreamy. Watch the vid below if you like. The album, Ode To J. Smith, is out on September 29.

Speaking of dreamy, The Cure have yet another new single out. This one, “The Perfect Boy,” is the last of the lot before the October 13 release of their thirteenth full length. To tide you over, here’s the video for “The Perfect Boy.”

It’s going to be a bitchin’ fall for Anglophiles… Travis, The Cure, and new Verve coming very soon. Good times.

Okay, fine people. That’s all for now. You can email us at musicblog@sxsw.com if you get a hankerin’.

Nights, lp
